Ariana Grande has been posting behind-the-scenes imagery from her new video for “Boyfriend,” a surprise single set to release on Friday. It feels like Grande has been dropping new music nonstop since the releases of Sweetener and thank u, next, as well as this summer’s bop “Monopoly” with B.F.F. Victoria Monet.
But with this release of the “Boyfriend” music video, it appears Grande’s given her signature hairstyle a bit of a makeover, one that will be right at home in the Ariana Grande Ponytail Hall Of Fame: A teased bouffant ponytail. Yes, the look made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the ’60s has been brought back in full force by Grande, who typically prefers her ponies on the sleeker side. It’s a welcome switch-up from the look we’re accustomed to with Grande, since this one has more of a throwback flair.
The images show Grande in an elaborately-decorated room, with her hair in a teased crown and two sections of hair pulled out to frame her face. She even pairs the look with a flat, wide black headband in some photos. The ensemble is completed with lilac eye shadow (more Twiggy than Bardot, but we’ll go with it) cat-eyeliner, and white oval-shaped nails. Grande is even sporting threads from legendary French fashion house Givenchy in the video — apropos as she is the face of he brand’s Fall 2019 “Winter of Eden” collection. While Givenchy was the house of fellow 1960’s fashion icon Audrey Hepburn, it’s clear that Grande’s styling inspiration is more Bardot.
She’s serving full 1960’s realness, and we’ve never seen something like this from Grande before, even though 2019 has marked a year of adventurous hair choices for the singer. Considering that the bouffant got a bad rap for a few years there (no thanks to the Bump-It), we’re ready to welcome it back with open arms.
